Chateau Moulin Riche by Leoville Poyferre St-Julien 2014 750ml

The 2015 vintage of Moulin Riche, a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, and 20% Petit Verdot, displays a mineral-driven profile with chocolate and berry nuances. Initially dense and a bit standoffish, the wine develops with blackberry, blueberry, and subtle black olive aromas. The palate offers firm, slightly hard tannins, giving the wine a masculine structure and a sharp, terse finish. Over time, it is expected to evolve into a more rounded and balanced expression of its terroir, showcasing the signature freshness and depth from Saint-Julien.

This has a mineral, chocolate and berry character with firm and silky tannins. Medium and flavorful. Subtle.

This year, the Chateau Moulin Riche 2015 contains 20% Petit Verdot. Didier Cuvelier told me that his three parcels were rained on just before picking and were therefore deselected from the Grand Vin. The remainder consists of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot. It has a dense, almost standoffish nose at the moment (I speculate whether this was due to the inclement conditions at the time of tasting.) Blackberries and blueberry at first, a puff of chalk dust a little later and then after ten minutes there is strong black olive scent. The palate is full-bodied with dense, slightly hard tannin. This is a very masculine Moulin Riche, aloof at this early juncture with a sharp, terse finish. It needs to find more "rondeur" by the time of bottling but I suspect it will eventually settle at the upper end of my score bracket.

Garnet core. More evolved in aroma than the Clos du Marquis just tasted but still with dark fruit and a touch minty. Juicy and lighter-bodied, just enough depth of fruit to balance the acidity. Tannins still firm.

Further west, in the Saint-Julien area, Château Moulin Riche is made from a single block of 20 hectares. It is this terroir, unique and different from that of Léoville Poyferré, which inspired its revival, guided by the intuition of Didier Cuvelier. The wines express the generosity and freshness of the Saint-Julien terroir.
