A sleeper of the vintage, the 2008 Pichon Longueville Baron is one of the densest, most concentrated wines of Pauillac in 2008. An inky/purple color is followed by aromas and flavors of creme de cassis, blackberries, charcoal, coffee and licorice. Exceptionally full-bodied with velvety tannins and undeniable appeal, this gorgeous, well-proportioned, larger than life 2008 should age effortlessly for two decades or more. With the realistic pricing that remains for many 2008s, this is a no-brainer.

As you would expect, this turns up the bass on its neighbour. It's a full-throttle display with a powerful dark undertow, approaching peak-Pauillac. It is wonderfully balanced, with flavours of graphite, dark plum, coffee and grilled rosemary, and the tannins are so well structured, fine and layered. It's a great wine in an average year, showing its pedigree and easily among the best in the appellation in 2008.

Wow. So much bright fruit in this with orange peel and black currant character. Floral and lively. Full body, silky tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Hard not to drink now. Do it.

71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot. Aged 20 months in oak barrels (80% new).
Garnet hue. Dark fruit, camphor and black olive on the nose. Stony as well. Long and linear in style with a lovely freshness to the palate. Tannins finely etched but present. A touch of sweetness but not overly indulgent. More ‘classic’ than ‘solar’.

Château Pichon Baron 2008 boasts a dark and intense colour. The spectrum of aromas is broad, ranging from spices (pepper) to red and black fruit (cherry and blackberry), plus all the refinement of wood (cigar box) and toast. The range of flavours is every bit as impressive, the tannins are delicate and fleshy, and volume on the palate reveals all the subtlety of the vintage. The structure is carried nicely by elegant fruit flavours and the length worthy of the estate's very finest wines. This is a wine in the characteristic style of the estate, one that can be kept for many years but is starting to mellow out now. It is sure to win over the more patient wine lover, as well as those keen to discover all the nuances of a racy great wine.
