Chateau Margaux 1995 750ml

The 1995 Chateau Margaux is a powerful and rich wine with deep aromas of licorice, black fruit, and smoky oak. Medium to full-bodied, it combines extraordinary richness with excellent balance and firm tannins, showing both elegance and intensity. While already approachable, it remains a wine that will continue to evolve beautifully over the next few decades. With its complexity and refinement, it’s a classic Margaux that’s now reaching its prime.

Bottled very late (November, 1997), the 1995 has continued to flesh out, developing into one of the great classics made under the Mentzelopoulos regime. The color is opaque ruby/purple. The nose offers aromas of licorice and sweet smoky new oak intermixed with jammy black fruits, licorice, and minerals. The wine is medium to full-bodied, with extraordinary richness, fabulous equilibrium, and hefty tannin in the finish. In spite of its large size and youthfulness, this wine is user-friendly and accessible. This is a thrilling Margaux that will always be softer and more evolved than its broader-shouldered sibling, the 1996. How fascinating it will be to follow the evolution of both of these vintages over the next half century. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2040.

A surprise. Initially deceived by its light colour, I was taken by the beguiling intensity of plummy fruit aromas with hints of smoke, earth and a first suggestion of truffle or forest floor. The texture is softening now – supple and silky, but still surprisingly dense. Shows restraint and elegance, but holds on regally at the finish which augurs well for extended ageing. This classic year should not be overlooked – it is now coming into its own and should continue to improve for decades.

Dark crimson with some evolution at the rim. Very focused and concentrated. Lots of concentrated cassis on the nose. Some graphite. Really cool and fresh (there are apologies for serving it too cool). Middle aged. Far from luscious but very true to type. Still quite bit of tannin in evidence. Work in progress.

1995 is a truly great vintage with all the hallmark characteristics: power, depth, richness, complexity, but also delicacy, subtlety and harmony. Today the nose is not really closed, but still rather restrained. All the aromas are there, but a bit masked. On the palate, it is obviously the power that dominates; the tannic structure is dense, tight and firm without being hard.Ideally, you should wait a few more years before starting to drink this superb wine whose balance will ensure a very harmonious evolution.
