Chateau Cos D'Estournel St-Estephe 2004 750ml

The 2004 Cos d'Estournel is a beautifully evolved wine that showcases the elegance and charm of this underappreciated vintage. Now fully mature, it delivers a complex and expressive bouquet of smoky charcuterie, dark fruits, spices, and a touch of balsamic lift. On the palate, it is refined and harmonious, with velvety tannins, bright freshness, and a long, satisfying finish.

This is another example of the wonderful 2004 vintage for Bordeaux. They are so delicious to drink now. The Cos is one of the best out there. And very reasonably priced at less than $150 a bottle. The charcuterie that hits you as soon as you open this Bordeaux is overwhelming: it'ssmoky, spicy and sexy. Minutes later you realize the complexity on offer, catching just a scent of the dark fruits hidden beneath, and before those, long and wonderful hints of balsamic vinegar. On the palate this shows elegance and finesse thanks to fabulous balance, extremely integrated tannins and a long and glorious finish. This is so satisfying and wonderful now, but the slightly bitter aftertaste on the rear palate suggests this could do with at least another 10 years before opening.

The 2004 Cos d'Estournel is a blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet in color with a touch of brick, the nose is still very youthful, sporting notions of plum preserves, blackcurrant cordial and Black Forest cake with hints of garrigue, wild sage, charcuterie, black olives and unsmoked cigars. The medium to full-bodied palate is generously fruited with bags of earthy and black fruit preserves layers, framed by chewy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long.

Dark crimson. Fresh and lively with quite tough, dry tannins on the end. Not quite enough fresh fruit on the palate. Some bitterness.

FASCINATING, OPULENT, VOLUPTUOUS
An invitation to travel.
Like a solitary adventurer who has sailed the seas, Cos d'Estournel initially appears secretive and intriguing. Then he slowly reveals himself. Step by step, with small touches, he evokes stories of distant cities, markets with a thousand secrets, joyful celebrations in warm stone villages, and women with voluptuous curves. The smells, colors, and flavors are gradually revealed, like happy memories. An elegant, fascinating charm, somewhere between restraint and unashamed sensuality.
CABERNET SAUVIGNON: 74%
MERLOT: 23%
CABERNET FRANC: 3%
While in its youth, the 2004 vintage might appear slightly austere, the ageing was widely beneficial. It unfolds today at its real value, with specific aromas, in point of fact woody and spicy. It is an elegant wine with remarkable personality.
