Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz 2021 750ml

The 2021 Bin 28 Shiraz hails from five regions: McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Wrattonbully and Clare Valley. The wine matured for 12 months in American oak (7% new), and this really amplifies the sweet fruit characters in the mouth. It's already nicely integrated aromatically, despite being poured and opened in the same instance (i.e., no preparation prior to tasting), and is redolent with red and purple berry fruit. Spicy, full throttle and loads of tannin in the mouth. Nicely chewy. The first vintage of this wine was in 1959. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Loads of flavor and chomp to this full-weighted, highly regional expression. Black currant, blue fruits, clove, verdant herbs, charcuterie and a waft of menthol across a finish framed by malty oak. Yet nothing obtuse. The finish is warm, poised and nourishing. A highly satisfying expression with a strong track record. Drink or hold.

Bin 28 offers a showcase of warm-climate Australian Shiraz ripe, robust and generously flavoured. First made in 1959, Bin 28 is named after the famous Barossa Valley Kalimna Vineyard purchased by Penfolds in 1945 and from which the wine was originally sourced. Today, Bin 28 is a multi-region, multi-vineyard blend, with the Barossa Valley always well represented.Kalimna? TASTING NOTE
Color: Deep dark cherry-red
Nose: Initially, plummy fruits meshed with sweet spices (predominantly cinnamon), almond. And then a pause to imbibe the aromatic atmospherics of a patisserie: Creme anglaise, cannoli with vanilla custard ... and classic bourbon vanilla at that! A croquembouche's (profiterole) hazelnut brittle. Grated chocolate both white and dark. Fresh, awakening.
Palate: Medium-bodied. Raspberry/chocolate flavours with a sprinkling of spice and cola. Symptoms: Fleshy, and an almost glycerolic texture; bulbous/expansive palate profile. Diagnosis: Tannins integrated/embedded supportive, not standing apart. Oak no obtrusive flavours to speak of ... yet all the benefits of a calm maturation is seasoned hogsheads. Acidity - in tune with the wine's weight and structure. Cure: Rest in bottle for a year or two. Needs time.
