Chateau Leoville Barton St-Julien 2001 750ml

The 1999 Château Léoville-Barton is a Bordeaux with a powerful and brooding character, showcasing the intense tannins typical of the vintage. Initially dry and austere, the wine has developed over the years, offering a mix of mineral, herbal, and oak-driven aromas with a strong presence of dark fruit. While it was once recommended for further aging, it is now reaching its maturity, with tannins softening and the flavors becoming more integrated. A great choice for those seeking a complex, structured St-Julien that is ready to drink now.

Dry tannin and a backward, austere, muscular, brooding personality characterize Leoville Barton's 1999. However, it is packed with grip, body, and depth. Give it 5-6 years of cellaring and hope the tannin melts away sufficiently for the fruit to come forward. It should last for two decades, but will it ever be balanced?

Very Cabernet on the nose. Fragrant and deep flavoured. Scented and then notably dry on the end. Still pretty uncommunicative. Very dry and chewy. Wait! Only medium weight – lighter than Poyferré 2001.

Tasting
Brilliantly asserting its youth, this wine with its deep vermilion colour offers a multitude of aromas going from mineral notes of cold ash to Mediterranean scrubland, underlined by well-integrated oak. In the mouth the tannins are very present, a guarantee of good ageing in the bottle, as, along with the delicious liquorice notes, they will continue to develop over time.
