Chateau Latour Pauillac 1945 750ml

The 1945 Château Latour is widely regarded as one of the greatest vintages of this iconic estate. With a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, it showcases an exceptional aromatic profile of mint, currants, blackberries, and wet earth, creating a truly phenomenal bouquet. The wine is velvety and silky, with a long, lingering finish that captivates the palate for minutes. Over time, it has evolved beautifully, maintaining its power and concentration while offering a freshness that belies its age. It remains a remarkable example of Latour’s ability to produce wines of immense longevity and complexity.

This is the best bottle of 1945 I have ever tasted in my life, with a phenomenal nose of mint, currants, blackberries and wet earth. It’s very velvety and then feels silky. It goes on for minutes.

This has always been an irregular vintage. I purchased a mixed case of the 1945 Latour, some of which had been reconditioned at the Chateau and others with the original corks. Those with the original corks always seemed to be the best, with a handful of them meriting ratings in the 95-98 range.

This was served blind with my bottle of 1961 that had been a little disappointing on opening and was much racier and more transparent than the wine that turned out to the 1961. Chock full of life and vivacity, extremely racy, dancing and very legible. Mellifluous with all its tannins resolved. Much fresher than the bottle tasted at Morton's in London last year. Glorious wine.

Château Latour’s Grand Vin is made exclusively from “vieilles vignes”, an average of 60 years-old, in the Enclos. Gravettes, Sarmentier, Pièce de Château... these are the names of some of the finest plots that express the character of the terroir and forge the wine’s identity every year.
The heart of the Enclos is the only terroir that, every year, can produce the depth, elegance and concentration that we expect of the Grand Vin. It is here that the Cabernet Sauvignon (accounting for more than 90% of the blend) can achieve optimal expression in terms of colour, richness and freshness. These wines need time - often a decade- before they begin to be ready for drinking.
In great vintages, the power and energy of Château Latour's wines enables them to continue to develop for several decades with ease. The bouquet and impressions on tasting gradually evolve, becoming increasingly complex, ultimately reaching a peak, after which the tannins soften and then the wine slowly declines. Beyond the pleasure of drinking them, these wines can produce powerful feelings and unforgettable moments.
Château Latour is also known for having the ability to produce fine wines even in difficult years.
1945 Wine style - This was a great (perhaps one of the greatest) vintages of Latour. Spicy nose, very structured eucalyptus in the mouth with fruit and substance. Long finish with wonderful lingering aromatic flavours. It is difficult to tell when the wine will begin to decline. It has been ready to drink since the late '70s and remains highly concentrated and full of charm, with a colour that has not evolved much for the age of the wine.
