Chateau Larrivet Haut Brion Pessac-Leognan 2014 750ml

Château Larrivet Haut-Brion 2014 is a wine that evolves with time, offering a complex blend of black fruits, liquorice, and slate. With a firm core of ripe tannins and good concentration, it presents a sophisticated finish. The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and a touch of Cabernet Franc results in a full-bodied wine that’s still maturing, making it a worthy candidate for cellaring. While its potential is evident, it currently requires patience to fully develop its complexity.

The cranberry and cherry notes on the nose are pretty, and this wine also has a firm core of ripe tannins and good concentration with some real sophistication on the finish.

Well-defined, classic black fruits, liquorice and slate. The levels of Merlot in the blend were higher in this year, almost equal to the Cabernet Sauvignon. The tannins are fairly forceful and there’s less evident joy than in the more recent vintages, although it's closed right now and it will take its time. Matured in 33% new oak. Blending takes place towards the end of ageing at Larrivet, meaning Stéphane Derenoncourt would have blended this when he arrived as consultant during 2015.

The 2014 Larrivet Haut Brion was closed on the nose when I tasted it: sultry damp moss and woodland scents infusing the reluctant black fruit, clearly needing more time to evolve. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly lactic entry. The acidity feels a little lower here, although there is a pleasant fleshiness towards the finish. This is fine, if not the best Larrivet Haut-Brion that I have tasted.

Tasted blind. Very dark garnet with bricky rim. Ripe and a little bit stewed in fruit character, quite evolved. Tea leaves. Thick, smooth tannins. Generous fruit but somewhat burly overall.
