Chateau Lagrange St-Julien 2008 750ml

The 2008 Château Lagrange offers a complex nose with hints of iodine, violets, and a touch of brett. The medium-bodied palate features firm, ripe tannins and a clean entry. While the wine shows good balance and improves in the glass, its tannins will require several more years to fully integrate. With a slightly rustic edge, this wine reveals elegance and energy, especially after decanting.

Tasted ex-chateau and single blind in Southwold. With yet another strong performance under blind conditions, the Lagrange 2008 continues as one of the most consistent performers in this consistent commune. It has a slightly bretty nose that subdues the fruit, notes of iodine and violets emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, ripe tannins, well balanced with a much cleaner entry than the nose suggest. It improves all the time in the glass but those tannins will take years to melt. Impressive. Tasted January 2012.

The fruit here has a grilled and spicy kick to it, an elegant and almost brooding expression which is just starting to loosen up, but it doesn't escape the slight rusticity of the tannins in this vintage. Yet again, it's on the length (or lack of it) that this vintage shows itself most clearly. Decant.

Tasted blind. Dark crimson. Perfumed and polished on the nose. Very luscious and winning with some fine tannin underneath. Real energy here. A real standout performance by this property.

THE VINTAGE
The month of July is hot and dry, but never overhot. Cool temperatures and rainfall come back again in August. The Bordeaux miracle happens again from September 15th onwards. The hot days speed up thus ripening, drying the bunches. The nights are cool, finishing off the ripening of the polyphenols. First use of the small tanks introduced earlier this year.
TASTING NOTES
Notes of iodine and violets emerging with time. Sensation of freshness and purity of aromas on the nose. The palate is mediumbodied with firm, flesh and ripe tannins, well balanced. It opens up in the glass but these tannins will take a few more years to get integrated.
